The sun was setting as they slunk out through the backdoor of the motel room. They had decided it was better they wait until dusk before making any kind of move. After a fairly brief perusal of the local phonebook—quaintly available in one of the room’s dresser drawers, and a necessary research tool since none of them had a phone with internet connection anymore—they had found out that the coroner’s office was still operating and housed at the address given in the file.

The place was still open, closing in an hour, and they entered through the sliding doors into a small waiting room. The linoleum floors and harsh overhead lighting made Ella feel a little queasy. She hated visiting hospitals, and this was giving off severe hospital vibes. Of course, every occupant in this place wasn’t hovering near death but were actually very deceased.

She reached for Michael’s arm, grabbing his wrist.

“What is it?” he whispered as Mason walked up to the receptionist.

“Injuries make me feel sick,” Ella whispered back.

“There are no injured people here,” he returned. “Only dead ones.”

“How do you think they got that way?” she hissed.

“Couldn’t you have thought of that before we came here?” he asked.

She grasped his wrist in a tighter hold as a man in a white lab coat appeared at the end of the short corridor that stretched before them. “I thought it’d be different,” she said. “I thought it’d be… carpets and… men in suits.”

“Like a funeral home?” he asked, raising his eyebrows meaningfully at her mistake.

She glared at him, but he moved his arm so that she let go of his wrist and proceeded to rest the arm loosely around her waist. He pulled her a little to him and suddenly his scent was all she could think about. How it played with her mind, made her remember all sorts of things associated with it.

“Can I help you?” The question had been asked by the man in the lab coat, who had stopped to survey them, soft frown on.

She forced a smile. “We’re here about a… dead… person,” she said haltingly, Michael’s hold on her tightening somewhat.

“Then you’ve come to the right place,” the coroner deadpanned, as if he was told that line more than once a day. His nametag let them know his name was Victor. “What’s the name of the deceased?”

“Brendan Rosen,” Ella said. “But he died a long time ago. Only he was brought here, and we were hoping to look at his file.”

Victor frowned at her. “That’s not possible, I’m afraid,” he said. “Are you relatives of the deceased?”

She wished he would stop saying the word ‘deceased’.

“No,” Michael replied. “We’re relatives of someone who knew him, though.”

“Even if you were relatives of the deceased, we would have no way of letting you into our locked files,” Victor informed helpfully. “You would have to have very good reason to get into those.”

“Oh, we do,” Ella said through a tight smile, Michael’s hold on her waist tightening to the point of making her give a yelp as his fingers digging into her waist tickled her.
